SIL Compound Meetings and PTC training centre (Papua Indonesia)
February 2016 – This trip to Jayapura, Sentani Indonesia was to convert old and largely unused office buildings into accommodation for missionaries, who were coming into the city to film and record dialogue for the “Jesus” film in their mother tongue. Bedrooms, ensuite, living and meals areas were all created over a four week period with the help of local labourers. Selecting, purchasing and then furnishing and fitting out all rooms rounded out an extremely full-on month.
After initial climatisation BuildAid director Ian meet with SIL regional director and visited the Papua Training Centre in Sentani. The focus of discussions centred primarily on how we could best service those working in West Papua. The needs were great to say the least.
SIL investigation trip, Phase 2
BuildAid was able to travel to HaHa village in the remote area of to restrump the home of Ron & Erin Hesse. We went not knowing what the conditions were like or what materials would actually be needed. All we had to go by were some photos emailed to us. Building experience really comes into play in situations like this. During this visit we were able to also install the water tank, installed a new cover for the septic tank, put up a clotheslines.
SIL investigation trip, Phase 3
BuildAid director Ian was able to travel to Taria to visit Peter Wai’s home. Once there he was able carry out some immediate improvements and discuss future works. A toilet was connected and tiling worked on. He even had time for some roofing!
Perhaps one of the most memorable events of this trip was the medical evacuation arranged for a young village girl that had suffered extensive scolding to her face. We were able to assist with getting her on a medivac flight to hospital for treatment.
BuildAid has also been able to hold talks regarding future use of Wycliffe centre complex in Sentani with the view to drawing up long term usage arrangements and occupancy.
